Jan Reha and Kary York Outline the Steps in the Interview Process

In this segment Jan Reha, Career Discovery and Kary York, Insurance Resourcing Insurance Resourcing, discuss the Various Stages of the Interview Process.

The Phone Interview is the first step in the interview process. Make sure the interview is scheduled for a time that works for you.  This first interview involves basic knock out questions.  Understand that this stage is used for screening and may not be affiliated with the company.

The next phase is the ‘Face to Face’ interview.  Before walking through the door, get a clear understanding of their interview process. Finding someone who has previously interviewed with this company is helpful.  Make sure you know who you will be meeting with. Research the interviewer to know the employee’s title and their role in the company. Keep in mind that you will be meeting with multiple people throughout the interview process, so treat each person with a valuable impression.

The second interview varies depending on the company. For example, there might be a technical testing interview for a statistical-based position. This interview examines how well you follow direction and evaluates your fit with the company. Before moving forward, ask for feedback on each stage of the interview process. Do not assume the interview went well. Find your point of contact with the company, whether it be your interviewer or HR manager, and ask for their critique. A simple assessment will prepare you for the next stage of the interview.

"I was having trouble finding a career path -- I felt I could do a lot of different things. So I did an eight-week program with Jan. Researching the background of what my ancestors have done -- creating a family career tree -- helped both professionally and personally. We identified a strong interest area in which I'm now getting licensed. Taking the tests and talking to Jan was very helpful. She was clear about informational interviewing, and figuring out what to do next. You won't exactly know what you'll get out of it, but in the end she will shed light on things about you that you didn't even know were there. ."--Mike, 27, Seattle
